Midweek madness dinner at Jai Hind

Updated: Dec 11, 2023

We went to the Indian restaurant Jai Hind on a Thursday early evening in June 2023 and it was not a problem getting a table that day as there were only a handful of people there. The location is good as it is located next to the library and cinema in downtown Stavanger. The restaurant is quite modern and light, and the menu seems to include classic items that you expect to find on the menu.

We got a poppadom to start with and that was good to snack on – but it only took about 10-15 minutes before we got the food. Nikki’s biryani came with a salad on the side and the biryani seemed a bit moister than what I have experienced in other places and not as fluffy. But it was a warming dish (we did specify that we wanted it hot), the lamb pieces were juicy and very tender, and it was great to get the raita on the side!

I had the Rogan josh (a dish with creamy tomato curry sauce) and this was also a warming and flavorful dish served with piping hot and fluffy rice on the side. I should have ordered it with the lovely lamb as the chicken breast pieces were a bit firm and dry compared to Nikki’s lamb pieces. We also had some plain nan that was good, but I would have enjoyed them a bit thicker and softer. The green salad came with some large pieces of paneer.

All in all, this was a good meal before we went to the movies, and we felt that portions were quite generous for the price we paid. Will not hesitate to stop by again in the future!

Pros: The menu includes the traditional dishes that you expect to find Good for a quick dinner before a movie Good portions for the price

Cons: Pretty standard menu Lack of atmosphere in an empty restaurant
