Dinner at the amazing RE-NAA

We have had the pleasure of visiting RE-NAA several times from the very start in 2015. Already back then, we saw Michelin stars on the horizon and as we now know, they have 3 stars! We visited RE-NAA again on a beautiful sunny June evening in 2024. Unfortunately, there had been some mix up during the booking process, so we had to enjoy the dinner in the penthouse suite of the beautiful Eilert Smith hotel. This means that we did not get the pleasure of watching the chefs in action in the actual restaurant, but in return we got to enjoy the dinner as a group with a stunning view of Stavanger harbor.

RE-NAA has a set menu so the only thing you need to consider is what to drink. They do offer great wine pairings, but as we were a group of 8 this evening, we decided to buy bottles from the extensive wine list. The menu will be seasonal so I’m not going to go into details but talk about some of the many highlights.

The starters were small pieces of food art with different flavors, texture and colors. My favorite here was chicken liver pate, chocolate and fir shoots! Seafood is important in the region and Norway, so we continued with sea urchin and various of mussels and oysters. Here the combination of mussel with yeast was fascinating and Mahogany clam served with ramson.

Next up was local mackerel, grilled scallop and one of RE-NAA’s signature dishes – the mouthwatering squid with black garlic and grilled lemon! We got wild salmon in a delicious Vin Jaune sauce with a heap of caviar – and luckily, we got some bread to scoop up that beautiful sauce! The monkfish with chantarelles and chicken sauce was also amazing. We moved over to a tender piece of suckling lamb from Nyyyt served with rapini (a broccoli relative) and some milk buns that were incredibly fluffy and soft.

We went over to dessert, but I think we were already quite satisfied. But we did enjoy ice cream petit fours and rounded it off with a cardamom bun and strawberries. This meal took from about 6 pm to about midnight and we did get breaks to enjoy the stunning views from the terrace – and we got to greet our host and hostess: Torill and Sven Erik Renaa!

Thank you to RE-NAA for another great culinary and hedonistic evening with great food and wine. As always, the food was amazing both in taste and presentation and the service is always impeccable. Thanks to Kristoffer Aga and Sander Johnsson for taking good care of us! If you do get a chance to dine at RE-NAA, it is highly recommended!
