Comfort food at ilo café & restaurant

Ilo Café & Restaurant opened earlier this year and is a café & restaurant located in the K8 building in Stavanger. We have been to Seid Grill & Cocktailbar a couple of times (located on the top of K8) and that has provided good food and stunning views. Ilo is located on the ground floor so it does not have the same great view as Seid and the ilo concept is to be a café during the day and restaurant at night.

We went there on a Friday night and the location might not be ideal as they are right by the entrance, but it is a lovely place with a stylish interior. We were pleasantly surprised to see that it was more or less full – luckily, we had booked in advance.

The atmosphere in the place was good with lively chatter and a great playlist (at least if you belong to Generation X). The menu is either a la carte or you can choose a 3-course dinner (presented on a blackboard) – we decided to have the latter and started with a halibut sort of ceviche style but served with a bit of soured milk from Jerseymeieriet and greens from Brimse gård. The liquid also contained a bit of habanero and hence it had a little bit of spiciness, and this was a great combination! The suggested wine (an Australian Sauvignon Blanc) complemented the dish in a very good way.

Next up was a treat of a dish: a very tender duck confit. This turned out to be quite the comfort dish with an Asian style glaze on the duck, a puree of carrots, plum sauce and shredded vegetables. There was also a sprinkle of buckwheat to give some crunch! Absolutely lovely combination!

We ended the meal with apple crumble served in a cardamom ice cream and topped with a rich and thick caramel sauce. This was a delicious comfort food meal ilo and it was well worth the bus ride into Stavanger to enjoy this. Ilo is a perfect spot if you want a good meal before you e.g. head to the theater or if you are going to Folken for a concert – or if you just want a night out with good food!

Pros:

- enticing comfort food

- great atmosphere and great playlist

Cons:

- limited wine list
