We have been to Nick & Jonnies at Gaffel & Karaffel a couple of times and they have a great sharing menu so going there with some friends is great! We went there on a sunny evening in July, and the patio gets sun from typically 6 to 8 pm and makes it perfect for an al fresco dinner. The patio is only available during summer as Stavanger is not really blessed with great weather the rest of the year.
We were not that hungry and hence we decided to just have some sharing platters. The menu does not seem to have a focus area so you can find a bit of everything on it (e.g. arancini, Korean wings, sashimi etc). Nick & Jonnies have also simplified some of the names on the menu and I can’t make up my mind if I like this or not. We decided to have arancini (or risotto balls as they call it), Baba ghanoush (smoked aubergine), scampi paella and hummus. Another amazing thing about Nick & Jonnies is the wine cellar! This is one of the few places in Stavanger where you can get your hands on aged wine! How about some Bollinger champagne from 1995? Dom Perignon 1964? Or Barolo Cascina Francia 1964 from Giacomo Conterno? These are just random examples to show some options – we decided to have Vinhas Velhas Branco 1991 from Luis Pato and it is interesting to see how wine develops when it is aged for this long!
The food was served, and it was not easy to fit all of it onto the small table. We had to switch to a larger table that had a bit uncomfortable seating to get space for everything – I guess the patio is more popular for just drinks. The hummus was quite good – even if we were a bit puzzled by the nuts on top. The smoked aubergine (the baba ghanoush) was also good, and it came with a feta cheese cream on top that was quite an intriguing twist – I especially like this leaves on mint in the mix. The arancini was pretty and came with truffle mayo and truffle pecorino. But we need to talk a bit about the scampi paella! For me, Paella is a dry(ish) rice dish flavored with saffron and it can be served with chicken, rabbit, seafood etc. At Nick & Jonnies this was more of a saffron barley soup with some shrimp and with a twist of lime. The dish itself was not bad – but I would argue that this is not paella.
If you want to enjoy some food while basking in the sun, Nick & Jonnies is absolutely a place you should consider. Due to the proximity to Fargegata, the area is bustling, and the sun condition is great in the evening. Bring your sunglasses, sun cream and enjoy some food – and maybe even some aged wine!
Pros: - great for al fresco dinner in summer - good for sharing food - a great wine list
Cons: - not the most comfortable seats - small tables
